Md. Anwar Hossain, Vice-Chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), visited Chapainawabganj on May 20, 2025, to conduct a firsthand assessment of mango production and export readiness. This visit, announced by the EPB, aimed to gather insights into challenges faced by local producers and discuss strategies to enhance Bangladesh's mango industry in the global market.

During his visit, Mr. Hossain inspected mango orchards, particularly those designated for export, and held a stakeholder meeting organised by the Chapainawabganj Chamber of Commerce. Discussions focused on strengthening the supply chain and improving the competitiveness of Bangladeshi mangoes.
Bangladesh, with its subtropical climate, is highly conducive to fruit cultivation, producing over 70 varieties. Mangoes, a national favourite, remain the most popular. The global fresh fruit market is valued at approximately USD 778.37 billion in 2025, with the international mango market projected to reach USD 71.98 billion in 2025 and grow to USD 97.82 billion by 2029 at an 8% CAGR.

Bangladesh's mango production has shown consistent growth, reaching 2.77 million metric tons in FY 2022-23. The country ranks 7th globally in mango production. Key export varieties include Langra, Fazli, Himsagar, and Ashwina, alongside successful cultivation of international varieties like Alphonso and Miyazaki. Beyond fresh fruit, various mango-based products, rich in essential nutrients, are being developed for export.

Export earnings from mangoes for FY 2024-25 (July-April) partially accounted for USD 0.277 million. Bangladesh exports mangoes to countries like the UK (the largest importer), Hong Kong, Canada, and Sweden.

A significant development is the initiation of mango exports to China, following the Chinese government's interest. A list of eligible producers and exporters has been submitted to the Chinese Embassy, pending customs approval.

To further boost exports, stakeholders emphasized the need for improvements in shelf-life extension, hot water treatment facilities, chemical safety, advanced packaging, fruit fly control, compliance with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and adherence to sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) standards. The EPB reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture and other agencies to address these areas.

The Chapainawabganj Chamber proposed key initiatives, including the establishment of an agro-based Export Processing Zone (EPZ), a national mango policy, solar panel installation in orchards, enhanced access to credit for farmers and exporters, grassroots quarantine facilities, and direct air shipment from Rajshahi. They also requested EPB sponsorship for a national mango fair in Dhaka. Additionally, the EPB Vice-Chairman visited local silk and handicraft industries to assess their needs.
