Mosammat Sagorika produced a stunning hattrick to guide Bangladesh to a commanding 4-0 victory over Nepal in the final match of the SAFF U-20 Women's Championship at the Bashundhara Kings Arena on Monday, securing yet another South Asian crown for the reigning champions.
The 17-year-old striker from Ranishangkail, Thakurgaon, returned with a vengeance after missing the previous three matches due to a red-card suspension. Her comeback proved decisive as she led Bangladesh's charge with clinical precision in front of a jubilant home crowd.
The match began with a minute's silence in honour of the victims of the deadly Air Force jet crash in Dhaka earlier in the day, but the sombre atmosphere soon gave way to cheers as Bangladesh asserted their dominance from the outset.
Having won all five of their round-robin matches, Bangladesh only needed a draw to retain their title. However, coach Peter Butler fielded his strongest line-up, opting for nothing less than a  win against a dangerous Nepal side.
Unlike their earlier closely fought 3-2 victory over Nepal, Bangladesh controlled the game from start to finish. Sagorika wasted no time, testing Nepalese goalkeeper Sujata Tamang within the first two minutes. Minutes later, she saw her glancing header cleared off the line, but she was unstoppable on her next attempt. In the eighth minute, Sagorika rounded the keeper after receiving a through ball from Sapna Rani and slotted home the opener.
Nepal nearly levelled in the 19th minute, but Bangladesh survived when a volley from Nepal's top scorer Purnima Rai struck the crossbar.
After halftime, Bangladesh tightened their grip on the game. Sagorika doubled the lead six minutes into the second half with a spectacular turn and finish following a through ball from Umehla Marma. Her third goal came just seven minutes later, as she coolly chipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to complete her second hattrick of the tournament.
Despite Sujata Tamang denying her twice more, Sagorika added a fourth in the 74th minute with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area, capping a remarkable individual performance.
The 4-0 victory not only secured Bangladesh the SAFF U-20 title but reaffirmed their dominance in women's age-group football. Since the introduction of age-level competitions in South Asia in 2017, Bangladesh have now claimed seven titles from 13 tournaments.
The emphatic win, witnessed by a 5,000-strong home crowd, stands as another proud moment in Bangladesh's growing football legacy, with Sagorika emerging as the country's latest football sensation.
