Dhaka recorded the eighth worst air quality in the world on Sunday morning, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 111 at 9:00 AM.

An AQI reading between 101 and 150 is classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” indicating that children, older adults and people suffering from respiratory conditions may face health risks from extended exposure to polluted air.

According to the AQI ranking, Delhi topped the global list with a score of 193. Santiago followed with 177, while Kinshasa ranked third with a score of 163.

Dhaka has long battled severe air pollution driven by construction activities, vehicle emissions, industrial operations and dust from roads and development projects.

The AQI is a daily indicator used to measure air quality and assess the potential health effects associated with pollution levels.

Air pollution in Bangladesh typically intensifies during the dry winter season and improves with the arrival of monsoon rains.

Health specialists continue to advise residents to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure and wear protective masks when air quality deteriorates.
