Four people were shot dead and nearly 100 others injured, including police personnel, in violent clashes in Gopalganj on Wednesday following an attack on the National Citizen Party (NCP) motorcade by alleged Awami League activists.
The deceased were identified as Dipto Saha (25), Romjan Kazi (24), Emon Talukdar (18), and Shohel Molla (35). Hospital authorities confirmed all four died from gunshot wounds. In response to the escalating violence, authorities imposed a curfew in Gopalganj from 8:00pm Wednesday until 6:00pm Thursday to restore order. The clashes broke out as the NCP convoy was returning from a rally near the  launch ghat area in front of Gopalganj Government College. According to witnesses, activists of Chhatra League and Jubo League launched attacks on the NCP procession, triggering hours of clashes with law enforcement.
The confrontation turned parts of the city into a battleground, stretching over 1.5 kilometres from the market area to Pachuria. Police and army personnel reportedly opened fire on the attackers, leading to the fatalities.
Amid the unrest, miscreants attempted to attack the district jail but were repelled by police.
Following the violence, local authorities imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings across the district. Law enforcement used tear gas and rubber bullets to control the crowds and disperse the attackers.
NCP leaders and activists sought refuge at the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and Police Superintendent for safety. Later, under army escort, they were safely evacuated towards Bagerhat.
Authorities announced that the curfew will remain in effect until 6:00pm Thursday to maintain law and order in the district.
