A contractor company has abandoned the work of digging a road in Aditmari, Lalmonirhat. Despite sending several letters, the engineering department has not been able to complete the work with the contractor. The road, which was dug during the monsoon, has become a cause of extreme public suffering in the area.
It is learned that the only hope for the people of Mahishkhocha, Bhadai and Palashi unions of Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat is the Mahishkhocha Burirhat JC Road to communicate with the upazila headquarters. The nearly 5-kilometer road was filled with potholes after not being repaired for a long time. In view of the long-standing demands of the locals including pedestrians, the Local Government Engineering Department took the initiative to repair the road under the Rural Road Repair and Conservation Project. A contracting company named M/s Shakil Traders of Bhola Chaora area of ??Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila got the work at a contract price of Tk 2 crore 55 lakh. The Lalmonirhat Local Government Engineering (LGED) Department signed the contract on January 12. According to the contract, the repair work of the road is scheduled to start on January 18.
and be completed by June 26. According to the contract, the contractor company dug up the road for the repair and constructed a guide wall and collected Tk 18 lakh as the first bill for about 20 percent of the work. After that, the work was stopped. Five months have passed since the road was dug up, but the work has not started. After that, the local engineering department could not get the contractor to work again despite sending several letters. Now there is uncertainty about the road renovation. Just as the road is collapsing and deteriorating due to the monsoon rains, public suffering has increased. A local source claimed that Alam, the brother of former Upazila BNP president Aminur Islam, purchased the road renovation work from Messrs. Shakil Traders at an 11 percent profit and started the work. However, if the work is done at an 11 percent profit, there may be losses. The next contractor has abandoned the work and fled due to this fear. Meanwhile, the main contractor Messrs. Shakil Traders has not responded to any letter from LGED. As a result, the implementation of the work has become uncertain. The road has collapsed in most places due to the rain, which has increased the extreme public suffering. Accidents are happening every day due to the formation of large holes on the road. Vehicles are being damaged. The goods of traders are being destroyed. Pedestrians and locals are being crippled. Aditmari Upazila Engineer AKM Fazlul Haque said strict action is being taken against the contractor. Executive Engineer Kawsar Alam said the contractor has promised to resume work within a week and complete it quickly.
