Dr Nabil Zunayed Sidney, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedic, Trauma and Spine Surgery at Shaheed Monsur Ali Medical College, has been praised for his humanitarian contributions to healthcare and community service.
A graduate of Uttara Adhunik Medical College, Dr Sidney received his early education at Barishal Zilla School and Amrit Lal Dey College.
According to his colleagues and patients, he has remained committed to providing medical care to people regardless of their social, political, religious or economic background. He has also provided treatment to people injured during the July mass uprising and continued serving patients during the Covid-19 pandemic despite personal risks.
As part of his community initiatives, Dr Sidney has provided free medical services to underprivileged people, including railway station hawkers, day labourers and other low-income workers.
For his role in providing medical treatment during the mass uprising, he received a special recognition from Nurul Haque Nur, then State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
Meanwhile, supporters and patients have recently protested against what they described as false and baseless reports concerning the physician. They said such reports could damage the reputation of a doctor who has long been involved in medical and humanitarian services.
They urged media outlets to verify information from all sides before publishing reports, stressing that one-sided or unverified allegations against medical professionals are unacceptable.
They also called for responsible journalism and said Dr Sidney’s continued efforts to provide healthcare to disadvantaged communities could contribute to building a healthier and more equitable society.
