Dengue Claims 52 Lives in 12 Days

Dengue claimed six more lives in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 149 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The DGHS said in its regular dengue bulletin on Sunday that 1,561 new patients were admitted to hospitals across the country during the 24-hour period from Saturday morning.

Of the 149 deaths recorded this year, 52 occurred in the first 12 days of September alone. August saw 43 deaths, while 36 people died in July, 13 in June, one in May, and two each in January and February.

With the latest admissions, the total number of dengue patients hospitalised this year has reached 51,837. Meanwhile, 1,394 patients recovered and were discharged in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 48,093.

Dhaka division recorded the highest number of new hospital admissions in the past 24 hours with 627 patients, followed by Khulna with 275, Barishal with 202, Chattogram with 181, Rajshahi with 104, Mymensingh with 93, Rangpur with 73 and Sylhet with six.
