Professor Dr Md Abdul Baset Mia of Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) has been honoured as one of the country’s 101 distinguished teachers in recognition of his contribution to teaching, research and agricultural education. The national recognition was conferred at a ceremony at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka today, marking World Teachers’ Day. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman handed over the awards, while Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milan chaired the program. Each awardee received Tk 200,000, a crest and a certificate.
A professor of Crop Botany and former Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at GAU, Dr Baset has spent decades teaching, mentoring students and advancing research in crop botany and related disciplines. His recognition has sparked pride across the GAU community, with colleagues and students describing it as a recognition of a career devoted to agricultural education and research. Congratulating Prof Baset, GAU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr GKM Mustafizur Rahman said the honour reflected his sustained contribution to teaching and research.
“This is not only a personal achievement for Professor Baset, it is also a matter of pride for Gazipur Agricultural University. His recognition will inspire our teachers and researchers to pursue excellence with renewed commitment.” On the other hand Dr. Baset Mia said “For a teacher, the greatest reward is seeing students succeed and contribute to the country and society. This recognition from the state is a source of immense joy and inspiration. I share this honour with my colleagues, students and everyone who has been part of my long journey. I will continue to contribute to agricultural education and research.”
Prof. Baset has also recently been elected President of the Bangladesh Society of Plant Science and Technology (BSPST) for the 2026–2028 term. His academic contributions extend to research, academic leadership and scholarly writing. He has authored books on crop plant embryology and reproductive structures, morphology and taxonomy and crop plant nutrition, while his research has focused on crop botany and allied fields.
