Gopalganj University welcomes 1,500 freshers

Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU) formally welcomed around 1,500 newly admitted students of the 2025-26 academic session at a colourful ceremony on Thursday.

The programme was held at the open stage of the university’s academic building, featuring the release of pigeons and balloons as symbols of peace and celebration.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Sohel Hasan presided over the event, while Gopalganj-1 MP Md Selimuzzaman Molya attended as chief guest.

Gopalganj-3 MP SM Jilani, Gopalganj-2 MP Dr KM Babor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Ataur Rahman, Treasurer Professor Dr Md Khasrul Alam, Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner Md Arif-Uz-Zaman and Superintendent of Police Md Habibullah, among others, attended the programme.

Congratulating the new students, Selimuzzaman Molya urged them to make the best use of their time, focus on their studies and strive to become responsible citizens.

He said the newly admitted students would have an important role in serving the country in the future. He also urged students not to disrupt the academic environment and assured that the three local MPs would work together to address the university’s problems.

Addressing the teachers, he called for unity and collective efforts to ensure quality education and develop the university into a reputed institution.

Jilani said they would work together for the university’s development, including the construction of residential halls and academic buildings and addressing the shortage of teachers.

He urged students not to create unrest on campus over minor issues.

Dr KM Babor said the university faced several challenges and that resolving them would take time. He said efforts were underway to secure approval for new development projects, while irregularities and corruption committed in the past would also be addressed.

In his presidential speech, Vice-Chancellor Sohel Hasan urged students to focus on their studies and set clear goals from the beginning of their university life.

He said graduates of the university were already succeeding as Bangladesh Civil Service officers and judges, expressing hope that the university would see even more such achievements in the future.

The vice-chancellor also sought government attention, through the local MPs, for the construction of residential halls, academic buildings and an auditorium.

Engineering Faculty Dean Dr Md Kamruzzaman and Nationalist Teachers Forum President and Dean of the Department of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine Dr Mahbub Hasan also spoke at the programme.

Deans of different faculties, heads of departments, teachers, officials and employees were present at the event.
