Recently, garment workers in various locations across Gazipur District including Kaliakair (Mouchak, Safipur, Pallibidyut, and Chandra) have been protesting to demand, among other things, an increase in their wages.
Throughout these ongoing protests, the Bangladesh Police have acted with extreme restraint, patience, and adherence to legal procedures. They have carried out their duties without engaging in direct conflict with the protesters, ensuring that no miscreants or malicious elements hiding among the ordinary workers could incite violence, carry out vandalism, or cause damage to state or public property, or harm the lives and safety of the public.
However, it has come to our attention that certain conspiratorial individuals and groups, seeking to serve their own selfish interests and turn the protesters against the police, have been spreading rumors that workers or students have been injured or killed by police gunfire. These claims are entirely baseless and fabricated. In reality, no shots have been fired by the police during the garment worker protests in Gazipur District, and no protesters have been injured or killed as a result of any such action.
We therefore urge the protesting workers and the general public not to pay heed to such rumors or misinformation. Furthermore, in response to the workers' demands—including wage increases—the government has already taken action by establishing a Wage Board to address these concerns.
Given this situation, we strongly urge all workers and the general public to refrain from engaging in acts of arson, destruction, or violence under the guise of protest—incited or provoked by miscreants—and instead focus on their respective work.
The Bangladesh Police remain committed to supporting all citizens in their lawful and orderly activities.
