A memorial meeting was held on Saturday to pay tribute to three distinguished personalities associated with the socio-cultural organization Samomona, with speakers calling for greater unity among progressive forces to build a secular and exploitation-free Bangladesh.
The event took place at 5:00 pm on July 11 at the Experimental Hall of the Ali Ahmad Chunka City Library and Auditorium.
The meeting commemorated the late Advocate Nurul Kabir Ahmed, a veteran lawyer, NAP leader and former adviser to Samomona; Rekha Gun, the organization's former office secretary; and Abdus Salam Babul, a Samomona member.
The programme was chaired by Samomona President Salahuddin Ahmed and moderated by its General Secretary Gobinda Saha.
Among those who addressed the gathering were Samomona adviser Delwar Hossain Chunnu, Ghelaghar adviser Rathin Chakrabarty, Narayanganj District NAP President Advocate A. Wahab, Communist Party of Bangladesh central leader Advocate Montu Ghosh, Samomona adviser and NAP leader Advocate Awlad Hossain, women’s leader Lakshmi Chakrabarty, Narayanganj District Mahila Parishad President Rina Ahmed, former Narayanganj District Communist Party President Hafizul Islam, Samomona adviser Dulal Saha, Narayanganj District Udichi President Jahidul Haque Dipu, Samomona Joint General Secretary Selim Bhuiyan and Narayanganj District Progressive Writers' Association General Secretary Bimal Kanti Das.
The meeting was also attended by Nurul Islam, Shyamal Pal, Manas Das, Kamrul Hasan, Bijoy Karmakar and several other members of civil society.
Speakers highlighted the contributions and progressive ideals of the three departed personalities, urging like-minded democratic and progressive forces to unite in promoting their vision of a secular, non-communal and exploitation-free Bangladesh through collective social and democratic movements.
