After a long professional career in Bangladesh’s media industry, journalist and writer Awal Chowdhury has continued his work in the United States, building a new chapter of his journalism career in New York.
Chowdhury currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of New York Morning, a New York-based digital news platform covering local affairs, public-interest issues, community developments, and international news. Alongside his editorial responsibilities, he continues to report from the field and write columns for various publications.
His journalism career in Bangladesh began in 2007 and developed across television, print, and digital media. He worked as a broadcast journalist and served as a Senior Reporter at Ekushey Television, later taking on editorial responsibilities in digital journalism. His professional experience includes coverage of national politics, economic and business affairs, breaking news, social issues, and matters of public interest, as well as newsroom editing and digital news operations.
After moving to New York, his reporting has increasingly focused on the experiences of immigrants, workers, underserved communities, and the broader social and civic life of the city. His work also extends to international affairs and professional events, reflecting New York’s role as a global center for politics, diplomacy, finance, and media.
“After spending many years in journalism in Bangladesh, coming to New York has given me an opportunity to view journalism from a different perspective. Here, local life, immigrant communities, and international events are closely connected. I want to use my previous experience while continuing to practice fact-based and public-interest journalism in this new environment,” Chowdhury said.
His professional activities in New York have included coverage of events and programs connected with the United Nations, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund, as well as journalism and media programs at leading institutions. He has also participated in professional discussions at Columbia University concerning the changing media landscape and the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism.
Beyond daily reporting, Chowdhury remains engaged with the broader journalism profession through membership in established organizations, including the National Press Club, the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), and the South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA).
Writing remains another important part of his professional work. In addition to his editorial responsibilities, he currently writes columns and commentary on public affairs, social issues, economic developments, journalism, and contemporary events.
His career has also included recognition through national and international awards and honors. In 2025, he received the Global Leaders Award for “Outstanding Contribution in Bangladesh Journalism & Social Care.” He has also received recognition for his journalism and social initiatives in Bangladesh and abroad.
Alongside journalism, Chowdhury has maintained a long-standing involvement in social initiatives. He is associated with LAMP Bangladesh, an organization founded in 2015 that has worked on education and social support initiatives for underprivileged communities.
From Bangladesh’s television and digital newsrooms to the diverse and internationally connected media environment of New York, Awal Chowdhury’s career has evolved across platforms and borders. Today, his work brings together editorial leadership, field reporting, column writing, community coverage, and engagement with the changing landscape of journalism.
