Mohammad Atiqur Rahman has joined as the new officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohanpur Police Station in Rajshahi, assuming office on Wednesday afternoon.

After taking charge around noon, he attended a preparatory meeting on the upcoming National Revolution and Solidarity Day, organised by the upazila administration at around 3:30pm.

According to police sources, the transfer order was issued on November 1 and signed by Rajshahi Superintendent of Police Md Mamun-or-Rashid.

Atiqur began his police career as a sub-inspector (SI), initially joining the force in Mymensingh district. During his career, he served in several districts, including Pabna and Natore. He also served as OC of Godagari Model Police Station in Rajshahi. Before his latest posting, he was stationed in Natore.

His appointment has raised expectations among local residents for improved law and order, stronger action against drug trafficking and crime, and better access to police services.

Residents expect the new OC to take effective measures against theft, mugging, extortion, drug trading and juvenile crime. They also want increased police surveillance in crime-prone areas and stronger security during night-time.

Members of the local community have also called for ensuring that people seeking police assistance are not subjected to harassment, irregularities or exploitation by middlemen.

Speaking about his priorities, Atiqur Rahman said, "Police are servants of the people. I will try to ensure that no one faces harassment when seeking services at the police station. Our doors will remain open to everyone, and we will give priority to ensuring that no victim is deprived of justice or legal assistance."

He said maintaining law and order, combating drugs, preventing crime and protecting people's lives and property would be among his key priorities.

"Regardless of who is involved, action will be taken against crime in accordance with the law. No wrongdoing will be tolerated," he added.

The new OC also stressed the importance of public cooperation, saying police could not maintain peace and security alone.

He urged elected representatives, journalists, political leaders, teachers, businesspeople and members of the community to share information about criminal activities and drug trafficking with law enforcement agencies without fear.

He said he wanted to work with the public to build a safe, drug-free and crime-free Mohanpur.

Local residents now hope his appointment will bring more visible improvements in policing and public safety in the upazila.
