Security Tightened in Diplomatic Zone over threat

Security has been tightened across Dhaka’s diplomatic zone following threatening emails sent to several foreign embassies, with missions in Gulshan and Baridhara placed under heightened surveillance.

Additional police personnel in uniform and plain clothes have been deployed around diplomatic establishments. Checkpoints, patrols and surveillance have also been increased, while Quick Response Teams have been kept on standby.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Abu Khayer of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Diplomatic Security Division said police had not received any written complaint regarding the threats.

He said the Chinese Embassy informed Police Headquarters about the matter through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following which the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit began investigating.

“There is no reason to panic,” Abu Khayer said, adding that adequate security measures had been taken across the diplomatic zone.

Police have yet to determine who sent the emails, their motive or exactly which embassies received them, as no formal written complaint has been submitted.

Meanwhile, representatives of several foreign missions met with CTTC officials to discuss the threats. Police suspect the emails, reportedly sent to several embassies late last week, may have been intended to create panic.

Police also confirmed that no general diary or written complaint had been filed with Gulshan Police Station regarding the threats.
