The Department of Persian Language and Literature at the University of Dhaka, in collaboration with Darul Irfan Research Institute, organized the 8th International Conference titled “Sufi Culture: Middle East, West Africa and Bangladesh” on Monday at the RC Majumdar Arts Auditorium.
University of Dhaka Treasurer Prof. Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury attended the inaugural session as the chief guest. The session was chaired by Dr. Md. Mumit Al Rashid, Chairman of the Department of Persian Language and Literature.
In his speech, Prof. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stressed the importance of promoting the message of humanism and love preached by Sufi scholars to establish peace in the crisis-ridden world. He also emphasized greater research and practice of Sufi culture to address the erosion of social values.
The conference featured presentations by scholars from Bahrain, Egypt, Syria and Bangladesh on various theological, social and literary aspects of Sufism. Among the speakers, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Sheikh Rashid Al-Muraikhi of Bahrain presented a paper on the Khalidi Naqshbandi order, while Al-Azhar University professor Dr. Jamal Farouk Jibril Mahmoud discussed Al-Azhar’s jurisprudential perspective on Sama.
A panel discussion was also held following the inaugural session, focusing on the regional and global influence of Sufism.
The Bangla translation of “Musibatnama,” a renowned work by Persian Sufi poet Fariduddin Attar Nishapuri, was also unveiled at the conference.
