International Disaster Risk Reduction Day 2026 was observed in Barishal on Tuesday under the theme “Start at Home to Build a Disaster-Resilient Nation.”

The programme began with a colourful rally from the premises of the Deputy Commissioner's Office. A discussion meeting was held afterwards at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner's Office, organised by the district administration and implemented by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Salma Parvin attended the meeting as the chief guest.

Speaking at the event, she stressed the need for greater preparedness, wider discussions and effective initiatives to strengthen disaster resilience, noting that efforts to build a disaster-resilient nation must begin at home.

She said remaining calm, exercising patience and making appropriate decisions were essential to dealing with earthquakes, fires and other natural or human-induced disasters.

Panic during emergencies can increase the level of danger, she said, urging people to identify emergency exits at their homes and workplaces, understand routes to safe locations and prepare alternative plans in case regular exits become inaccessible.

She also emphasised that disaster management could not be handled by the government alone. Government and private organisations, rescue agencies, engineers, public representatives, media professionals and ordinary citizens must work together to reduce risks and minimise losses.

Raising public awareness, conducting regular drills, constructing safe buildings and ensuring that every family and community member understands emergency procedures could significantly reduce disaster-related damage, she added.

The meeting was chaired by District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Ranjit Kumar Sarkar.

Special guests included Barishal Civil Surgeon Dr Md Saiyedur Rahman, Barishal Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Farida Sultana and Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Muhammad Selim Mia.

Officials from various government and private organisations, teachers, students, volunteers and media personnel attended the programme.

During the event, Barishal Fire Service Senior Station Officer Robiul Alam presented a documentary on earthquakes and fire incidents to highlight disaster risks and preparedness measures.
