A driver constable of Kishoreganj district police has been dismissed from service after testing positive for drugs, while a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
Kishoreganj Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mizanur Rahman confirmed the development on Tuesday afternoon.
The dismissed constable, Md Osman Gani, is the son of Abul Quddus of Sahabelishwar area in Dhamrai, Dhaka. He had been serving as a driver constable in Kishoreganj district police for a long time.
According to police sources, senior officials had noticed unusual behaviour and movements by the constable for some time and placed him under surveillance.
As part of efforts to maintain discipline and protect the image of the police force, authorities decided to conduct a drug test on him. The test was carried out at Kishoreganj 250-bed General Hospital on Tuesday morning, and the result came back positive.
Following receipt of the test report, the district police authorities immediately dismissed him and initiated legal action against him.
A three-member investigation committee has also been formed to examine the overall circumstances of the incident, including the types of drugs the constable allegedly consumed. The committee has been instructed to submit its report as soon as possible.
Speaking to reporters, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mizanur Rahman said immediate legal action had been taken against the constable following the positive test result.
He said the district police maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs and that the policy applied equally to police personnel.
“We are committed to ensuring that there is no connection whatsoever between the district police and drugs. We are conducting drug tests on personnel whenever suspicions arise,” he said.
