Bangladesh aims to generate at least 20% of its total electricity from renewable sources by 2030, rising to 30% by 2040, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman told Parliament on Wednesday.
The targets were announced during the question-answer session of the third session of the 13th Parliament in response to a question from Meherpur-1 MP Md Tajuddin Khan.
Under the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy 2026-2030, the government plans to generate 5,500 megawatts (MW) from rooftop solar systems and another 4,500MW from ground-mounted solar projects by 2030.
A further 450-550MW is expected to come from wind power, waste-to-energy, hydropower, floating solar and agrivoltaics, among other renewable technologies.
The prime minister said renewable energy has been prioritised to meet rising electricity demand and reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuels.
The government has introduced various incentives to promote renewable power generation, including conditional exemptions from duties and taxes on solar panels, inverters, batteries and related structures.
The government has also set the maximum generation cost for rooftop solar systems with batteries at Tk8 per unit from September 1, 2026. Under a special incentive scheme, surplus electricity supplied to the national grid by eligible rooftop solar users will be purchased at Tk10.50 per unit for three years.
The prime minister said the government has also formulated policies and guidelines covering renewable energy projects, private-sector participation, net metering and the national rooftop solar programme.
Additional guidelines have been developed for waste-to-energy projects, onshore wind development and carbon-credit processing, he added.
