A divisional awareness meeting was held in Barishal on Wednesday to raise awareness about protecting mother hilsa and ensuring the sustainable development of the country’s fisheries resources.
The meeting was organised by the divisional administration at the Circuit House, where fishermen and stakeholders were urged to comply with the government’s ban on hilsa fishing during the restricted period.
Divisional Commissioner Khalil Ahmed attended the meeting as the chief guest, while District Commissioner Md Mamun Khandaker chaired the event.
Police officials, including Kazi Md Choaib, Superintendent of Police at the Range DIG office, and District Police Superintendent AZM Mostafizur Rahman, attended as special guests.
Speakers said protecting mother hilsa would help increase hilsa production and ensure the long-term sustainability of fisheries resources. They stressed that fishing, transportation and sale of hilsa must remain suspended in rivers and waterways during the government-declared ban.
They also emphasised ensuring that government assistance reaches fishermen properly during the fishing ban.
Barishal Divisional Fisheries Director Md Kamrul Hasan, District Fisheries Officer Dr Md Hadiuzzaman, Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Md Jamal Hossain, representatives of the river police and Coast Guard, fishermen's representatives and officials from relevant government departments also attended the meeting.
