Anvir Bashundhara Group (ABG) Foundation has stepped forward to bear the treatment expenses of renowned Baul singer Kangalini Sufia, who has been struggling to receive medical care because of financial hardship.
On Wednesday evening, Chief Coordinator of ABG Foundation Md Aminul Islam handed over Tk1 lakh in cash to the veteran folk artiste at the Sufia Academy building in the Kalyanpur Ashrayan Project area of Rajbari sadar upazila. Foundation Coordinator Md Amir Hossain Mia was also present at that time.
The foundation extended the support after a news report highlighted that Kangalini Sufia’s treatment had been stalled due to a lack of funds.
“Kangalini Sufia is an invaluable asset to the country and the nation. After learning about her illness and financial difficulties, ABG Foundation came forward to support her treatment,” Aminul Islam said.
He added that ABG Foundation has been implementing different welfare-oriented activities across the country to serve humanity and improve the lives of marginalised people.
Kangalini Sufia has been living at Kalyanpur Bilpara in Alipur Union under Rajbari Sadar Upazila. Burdened by old age, she is suffering from heart disease, kidney complications, high blood pressure and several other health problems. Although she requires regular medical treatment and medication, financial constraints have made it difficult for her to receive proper care.
Expressing her gratitude, Kangalini Sufia said that she had been suffering from illness for several days and was unable to seek proper treatment because of financial constraints.
“I have been suffering from illness for quite some time and cannot go anywhere for treatment. My right arm is also fractured. I am grateful to ABG Foundation for providing financial assistance for my treatment,” she said.
The veteran artiste reportedly fell in the bathroom of her home on 11 June after feeling dizzy and sustained injuries. Her treatment had remained largely suspended because of financial hardship.
Welcoming the foundation’s support, Sufia’s daughter Pushpa said, “It is a great relief for our family that ABG Foundation has stood by us after learning about my mother’s illness. We hope she will now receive proper treatment and recover.”
Rajbari Deputy Commissioner Afroza Parvin said that the district administration has always been by Kangalini Sufia’s side.
“We are pleased to know that ABG Foundation has also come forward to support her. We wish her a speedy recovery,” she said.
