The 9th National Baseball Tournament 2026 officially commenced on Friday at the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP) Academy in Safipur, Gazipur.
Organized by the Bangladesh Baseball Federation with the overall support of the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party, the three-day tournament was inaugurated by the Director General of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP, Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud, as the chief guest.
Held under the theme, "The Strength of Baseball, the Commitment of Youth; Sports as a Profession, Security for Families," the tournament features 14 teams from across the country, including teams representing the Bangladesh Police and Bangladesh Ansar. As the Bangladesh Baseball Federation currently does not have its own playing venue, the competition is being hosted at the Bangladesh Ansar and VDP Academy.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud emphasized the importance of promoting modern and emerging sports like baseball to engage young people in constructive activities and help develop their talents.
He said the extensive grassroots network of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP would play a significant role in expanding the popularity of baseball across the country while encouraging youth to stay away from drugs, crime, and social degradation.
The Director General also noted that the force's involvement in organizing the tournament reflects its organizational capacity, infrastructure readiness, and commitment to the development of national sports. Although baseball is still at an early stage of development in Bangladesh, he expressed optimism that, through collective efforts, it would eventually become one of the country's popular sports.
Additional Director General of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP Brigadier General Mamunur Rashid and officials of theBangladesh Baseball Federation also addressed the event.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officers of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP, sports organizers, players, coaches, and invited guests.
