India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned following weeks of nationwide protests over alleged exam paper leaks and irregularities in recruitment and entrance tests.
The demonstrations were led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical campaign that evolved into a nationwide protest movement. Thousands of people gathered in New Delhi, with demonstrations spreading across the country, making it one of the largest public protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in recent years.
The movement gained further momentum after activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken to a hospital during his 26-day hunger strike, which ended on Friday. Public anger also intensified after police moved against protesters marching toward Parliament.
The "cockroach" symbol was adopted by demonstrators after a senior judge reportedly used the term to describe some unemployed young people. Protesters embraced it as a symbol of resilience and defiance.
