Bangladesh has urged India to expedite the extradition of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives, while also seeking the handover of the accused killer of Inqilab Mancha leader Osman Hadi under the bilateral extradition treaty.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson AKM Shahidul Karim said Sunday that Bangladesh and India have been in contact for several weeks over the possibility of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's bilateral visit to India.
He said Dhaka wants a “propitious environment” for the visit, but the process was affected by Sheikh Hasina’s open press interaction in New Delhi on August 5. Hasina, who is in India, has been convicted by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal of crimes against humanity.
“We have made our position clear on this matter. We are awaiting their response,” Karim said.
He added that Bangladesh would continue pursuing its “Bangladesh First” policy, based on sovereign equality, national dignity, non-interference in internal affairs and mutual benefit in relations with neighbouring countries.
