The bloodied body of an 18-year-old pregnant woman was found dumped in the yard of her in-laws’ home in Kaliganj upazila on Monday morning.
The deceased, **Afroza Begum**, was the wife of Din Islam, 24, of Nithak village under Chalbala Union. She was the daughter of Alfes Ali of Naodabas village in Chandrapur Union.
According to police and locals, Afroza and Din Islam had been married for about a year and lived in a rented house in Konabari, Gazipur, where Din worked. The couple reportedly had frequent disputes, and Afroza’s family alleged that she was often subjected to physical abuse.
Afroza was around five months pregnant. On Saturday night, she reportedly called her father and said she feared she would not survive the night because of her husband’s alleged abuse. Shortly afterwards, Din Islam reportedly called her family and said she was seriously ill and needed hospital treatment.
The family said they were later informed that Afroza had died. On Monday morning, her bloodied body was reportedly brought from Gazipur in a hearse and left in the yard of her in-laws’ house before the vehicle left.
Locals said there were multiple injury marks on her body, raising suspicions of foul play. Her family alleged that she had been beaten and assaulted to death and demanded a proper investigation.
Police recovered the body and prepared a preliminary report. Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Siddik said hospital documents accompanying the body stated that Afroza had died after consuming poison. However, police noticed injury marks on her body and are investigating the circumstances of her death.
The OC said legal action would be taken if the victim’s family files a formal complaint.
