The University of Dhaka has awarded the Khondkar Lutfi Rabbani-Nazmun Nessa Memorial Scholarship to meritorious students of the Department of Biomedical Physics and Technology.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam handed over scholarship cheques to the recipients as the chief guest at a ceremony held at the meeting room adjacent to the Vice-Chancellor’s Office on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
Treasurer Professor Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury presided over the programme. Dean of the Faculty of Science Professor Dr Mofazzal Hossain, donor of the trust fund and Honorary Professor of the Department of Biomedical Physics and Technology Dr Khondkar Siddiq-e-Rabbani, Acting Registrar Munsi Shams Uddin Ahmed, teachers, officials and students of the department were present.
For the 2022–2023 academic year, Md Abu Sayeed and Muttaki Bin Ali received Tk 24,909 each. For the 2023–2024 academic year, Md Mahmudul Haque Milu and Mithun Bhowmik received Tk 23,000 each.
Speaking as the chief guest, Professor Islam said such scholarships play an important role in recognising and encouraging talented students. Although the financial amount may be relatively small, he said, the recognition of academic merit inspires students to achieve better results in the future.
He also called upon former students and teachers of the University of Dhaka to come forward with similar initiatives so that students from different departments can receive greater support. Such recognition, he added, would inspire other students and help recipients become more confident and successful.
Professor Dr Khondkar Siddiq-e-Rabbani established the Khondkar Lutfi Rabbani-Nazmun Nessa Memorial Scholarship Fund on February 27, 2013, in memory of his parents, the late Khondkar Lutfi Rabbani and the late Nazmun Nessa. The fund currently has a principal of Tk 800,000.
Under the fund’s policy, 10 percent of the annual investment return is retained to increase the principal, while the remaining 90 percent is divided equally to provide one-time scholarships to two meritorious students each year based on recommendations from the department’s academic committee.
Khondkar Lutfi Rabbani was born in 1904 in Gorail village of Nagarkanda upazila in Faridpur. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics with honours from the University of Dhaka in 1930 and later joined the police department, where he earned a reputation as an honest, humble and just officer. He died in Pabna on June 11, 1962.
Nazmun Nessa was born on April 7, 1914. Despite having limited access to formal education, she was highly intelligent, creative and skilled in various creative activities. Following her husband’s death, she played a significant role in educating and establishing her children despite numerous challenges. She died on November 11, 2007, at the age of nearly 94.
