Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) and former member of the Bangladesh Law Commission Dr M Enamul Haque died at a private hospital in Dhaka early Sunday. He was 88.
He breathed his last around 5:00am while undergoing treatment, family sources said.
Dr Enamul Haque had been suffering from kidney complications and age-related ailments, according to family and other sources. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and two sons, besides a host of relatives, former colleagues and well-wishers.
Born in Kellabaruipara area of Godagari Municipality in Rajshahi, Dr Enamul Haque was the eldest son of the late Fahim Uddin Master and Anwara Khatun.
His death has cast a pall of grief over Godagari and different parts of Rajshahi.
Janaza in Godagari tomorrow
His janaza will be held at 11:00am on Monday (August 31) on the premises of AFG Pilot Girls' High School in Godagari, according to his family.
He will be buried beside his parents at the family graveyard at Daingpara Fazilpur following the janaza.
Earlier on Sunday, a janaza was held for him after Zuhr prayers at the Rajarbagh Police Lines in Dhaka. Senior police officials, heads of different police units, former colleagues and family members attended the prayer.
The Bangladesh Police also paid floral tribute to his coffin and accorded him an official funeral.
Distinguished career
Dr Enamul Haque joined the police cadre in 1964, beginning a long and distinguished career in law enforcement.
During his service, he held several important positions, including principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah and commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
He served as Inspector General of Police from October 16, 1991 to July 8, 1992, according to information published by Bangladesh Police.
After retiring from the police service, he served as a member of the Bangladesh Law Commission from 2004 to 2007.
He also served as Bangladesh's elected member of Interpol from 1988 to 1992, according to published reports.
Dr Enamul Haque was also highly accomplished academically. He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in history from Rajshahi University, followed by an LLB from the University of Dhaka. He later earned a PhD in public administration from the University of New Orleans in the United States.
Besides his professional career, he was involved in writing and contributed to various national and international newspapers and journals. He also authored a number of books.
Prominent family
Dr Enamul Haque came from a prominent family with a strong presence in Rajshahi's social and public life.
His elder brother, the late Barrister Aminul Haque, was a BNP vice-chairman, former minister and former member of parliament from Rajshahi-1 constituency.
Another brother, Major General (retd) Sharif Uddin, is the chairman of Northern Electricity Supply PLC (NESCO).
Dr Enamul Haque was also the paternal uncle of Prime Minister's Adviser Rehan Asif Asad and the father of Additional Attorney General Anik Rushd Haque, according to published reports.
His death has prompted condolences from former colleagues, relatives and people from different walks of life.
The family has requested relatives, friends, former colleagues, well-wishers and local residents to attend Monday's janaza in Godagari and join in bidding farewell to the former IGP.
