The Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner’s Gold Cup Football Tournament has reached its business end, with four teams securing places in the semifinals after a series of fiercely contested matches.
Defending champions Mohanpur have emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the title, while Paba, Puthia and Charghat have also made it to the last four.
Mohanpur will face Paba in the first semifinal on Monday (August 31), while Puthia will take on Charghat in the second semifinal on September 2. Both matches will be played at the Rajshahi Muktijuddho Smriti Stadium.
The tournament has already produced plenty of excitement, with goals, attacking football and foreign players adding to the attraction for local football fans.
Mohanpur underlined their title credentials with a commanding 5-2 victory over Godagari in the third match of the tournament on August 24.
Godagari stunned the defending champions by scoring early, but Mohanpur quickly responded to level the match. Rain then arrived, but it did little to slow down Mohanpur's attacking momentum.
The defending champions scored again before the break to take a 2-1 lead.
Godagari restored parity early in the second half, raising hopes of a close contest. But Mohanpur soon took complete control of the game, repeatedly breaking through Godagari's defence and scoring three more goals.
Godagari created several opportunities of their own but failed to convert them, as Mohanpur eventually secured an emphatic 5-2 win.
The final whistle sparked celebrations among Mohanpur players and supporters. Their foreign players also joined the celebrations, going into the stands to take photographs and selfies with fans.
The two foreign players representing Mohanpur attracted considerable attention with their pace, ball control and attacking ability, further strengthening the defending champions' reputation as serious title contenders.
In another thrilling encounter, Durgapur edged Tanore 3-2 in the tournament's fifth match on Thursday (August 27).
The two sides produced an entertaining first half, scoring two goals apiece. Sabbir and Sagar Mahanta scored for Tanore, while Zubayer and Palash found the net for Durgapur.
With the scores level at 2-2 at half-time, Durgapur returned with greater attacking intent. Their pressure eventually paid off when Pradip, wearing the number 6 shirt, scored to give his side a 3-2 lead.
Durgapur held on to the advantage until the final whistle to secure the victory.
The sixth match, between Puthia and Charghat on Friday (August 28), was decided by a single goal.
Puthia's number 6, Mizan, scored in the first half to put his side ahead. Charghat responded strongly after the break, launching a series of attacks in search of an equaliser.
However, Puthia's defence stood firm and denied Charghat the breakthrough. Mizan's first-half goal proved decisive as Puthia secured a 1-0 victory.
Charghat also fielded two foreign players, drawing additional attention from spectators at the stadium. Rajshahi-6 MP Abu Saeed Chand was also present at the match and encouraged the players and organisers.
Semifinal showdown
With the first phase now over, attention turns to the semifinals.
Mohanpur will enter Monday's clash against Paba with confidence after their emphatic win over Godagari. As defending champions, they will be looking to take another step towards retaining the trophy.
Paba, however, will have other plans and will be determined to stop the defending champions from reaching the final.
The second semifinal between Puthia and Charghat on September 2 is also expected to be closely fought, with Puthia carrying the confidence of their narrow victory and Charghat eager to bounce back.
With foreign players, local stars and enthusiastic supporters adding colour to the tournament, the Rajshahi DC Gold Cup has entered its most exciting stage.
All eyes are now on the semifinals, with the four teams set to battle for two spots in the final.
