A 62-year-old patient has reportedly died under “mysterious” circumstances after spending three days at Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital in Kishoreganj, while his family alleges that his medical records and death certificate have gone missing.
The deceased, Md Kanchan Mia of Chiknir Char village in Kishoreganj Sadar, was admitted to cabin No. 5123 on August 27 and died on August 30, according to a written complaint submitted by his younger brother, Md Abdul Khalek Nidan.
The family alleged that hospital authorities refused to provide any treatment-related documents or a death certificate following Kanchan’s death. When they later contacted the hospital’s emergency and administrative departments, they were reportedly told that no patient by that name had been admitted and that there was no record of his death.
Abdul Khalek alleged that the absence of records despite his brother staying in a hospital cabin for three days and the alleged concealment of his death amounted to an illegal and deliberate act. He said the family has sufficient evidence proving that Kanchan received treatment at the hospital.
On Monday afternoon, Abdul Khalek submitted a written complaint to the hospital director, seeking an investigation and legal action against those responsible. Copies of the complaint were also sent to the Kishoreganj Civil Surgeon and the Director of the Directorate General of Health Services in Dhaka.
Contacted about the complaint, hospital Deputy Director Dr Saiful Islam said the family had submitted the complaint to his office and that the matter would be investigated before necessary action is taken.
