Police detained 17 suspected brokers during raids at two hospitals in Kishoreganj on Tuesday, officials said.
A joint team of Kishoreganj Model Police Station and the Detective Branch conducted the operation at Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital and Kishoreganj 250-Bed General Hospital in the afternoon.
At a press briefing later in the day, Kishoreganj Police Superintendent Mizanur Rahman said police had received repeated complaints that broker groups were luring patients away from the hospitals by making various offers and taking them to private clinics and diagnostic centres.
He said police initially detained 32 people, including four women. Six were released after providing explanations that police found reasonable. Of the remaining 26, 17 were identified as suspected brokers, while the cases of nine others are still being verified.
