Members of Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (Ansar-VDP) have cleared around 500 feet of a canal through voluntary labour in Sagardari of Keshabpur upazila, helping protect an estimated 600–650 bighas of farmland from waterlogging.
The canal, located in the Kadar Beel area of Ward No. 8 under Sagardari Union, had become severely clogged with water hyacinth, aquatic weeds, algae, grass and other waste. Heavy rainfall had further disrupted drainage, raising concerns over waterlogging in areas where Aman paddy was being cultivated.
Acting on the initiative of Ansar Platoon Commander and local team leader Md Yasin Ali, Ansar-VDP members worked voluntarily to remove the vegetation and waste from the canal, restoring normal water flow.
The improved drainage has reduced the risk of waterlogging and potential crop losses across approximately 600–650 bighas of farmland. Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer of Sagardari Union Md Nur Islam provided technical assistance and agricultural advice during the initiative.
The Ansar-VDP said such voluntary community activities are being documented under its digital deployment system, STDMS, as part of its broader efforts to strengthen public service and community engagement.
Local residents said the initiative has helped ease public hardship while protecting agriculture and the environment, highlighting the force’s role in community welfare alongside its responsibilities in maintaining law and order.
