A fresh shipment of nuclear fuel uranium for the first refuelling of Unit 1 and the initial fuel supply for Unit 2 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant reached the project site in Ishwardi, Pabna, on Saturday under tight security.
The convoy carrying the uranium entered the plant premises at around 12:20pm, Pabna Deputy Commissioner Aminul Islam confirmed.
He said the first uranium shipment for the second unit of the Rooppur project had reached the site under strict security arrangements.
Members of the Bangladesh Army, the Special Response Battalion (SRB), police and various intelligence agencies jointly ensured security for the convoy.
The uranium arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka late Friday night aboard a special cargo aircraft from Russia. On Saturday morning, a convoy of three specialised trucks left Dhaka for Rooppur under heavy security.
According to project sources, the shipment was originally scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on September 24. However, the flight could not operate as planned because the aircraft carrying the uranium did not receive permission to use Pakistan's airspace.
Nuclear fuel for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant was brought to Bangladesh in 2023. The fuel was loaded into the reactor in May this year.
Electricity generated by the first unit is expected to be connected to the national grid soon, according to the report.
