A three-day training programme on applied nutrition began in Kishoreganj on Monday, focusing on balanced diets, healthy eating habits and nutrition awareness.

The training, titled “Applied Nutrition for Good Health,” was inaugurated at the Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila Parishad auditorium and will continue until September 23.

Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Zainul Alam Talukdar stressed the importance of eating a balanced and nutritious diet and including a variety of vegetables in daily meals.

“Eating more vegetables every day is essential for maintaining good health,” he said at the opening session.

He noted that consumers now have access to cauliflower in different colours, including green, yellow, orange and purple, offering a variety of nutrients.

According to him, orange and yellow cauliflower contain beta-carotene and other carotenoids that contribute to vitamin A production in the body, while purple cauliflower contains anthocyanin, an antioxidant responsible for its colour.

The training is being organised by the Bangladesh Institute of Research and Training on Applied Nutrition (BIRTAN) under the Ministry of Agriculture, with support from the Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila Agriculture Office.

Thirty participants from different professions are taking part in the programme, including Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officers, teachers, field-level officials of the Department of Fisheries and Department of Livestock Services, family planning officials, information officers, journalists, religious leaders and NGO workers.

Senior Scientific Officer of BIRTAN Mohammad Shariful Islam, Assistant Scientific Officer Md Sohag Mia and Kishoreganj Central Press Club President Ashraful Islam, among others, attended the opening session.

The training covers the importance of balanced diets, nutritious food, healthy eating habits and the role of nutrition in daily life. Trainers are also discussing how people from different professions can contribute to raising nutrition awareness in their families and communities.

Organisers said the programme aims to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills on nutrition so they can promote awareness about healthy diets and nutrition in their respective workplaces and communities.
