Rajshahi Press Club President and veteran journalist Md Saidur Rahman, 62, died while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital early Monday.
He breathed his last around 4:30am at the hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for kidney-related complications and other health problems.
Saidur Rahman was the son of former governor and lawyer Ataur Rahman and Language Movement veteran Monowara Rahman. His maternal grandfather was noted lawyer, politician and educationist M. A. Baks, who played a role in the establishment of Rajshahi University.
One of seven brothers and two sisters, Saidur Rahman was the fourth among the siblings. He was unmarried.
He passed his Secondary School Certificate examination from Rajshahi Government Laboratory High School and later studied at Rajshahi College. He went to Moscow, Russia, for higher education and obtained an advanced degree there.
Saidur Rahman began his journalism career with the Daily Karatoa in the 1980s. Over the course of his career, he worked for several media outlets. He was serving as a staff correspondent of the Daily Bhorer Kagoj at the time of his death.
He regularly wrote on various civic issues, problems and public-interest matters concerning Rajshahi. He was also involved in different public-interest and professional movements in the city.
Rajshahi Press Club General Secretary Golam Mostofa Mamun said Saidur had remained active in various movements concerning public interest and had written extensively about the problems and challenges facing Rajshahi.
Following news of his death, journalists, political leaders, social and cultural activists, government officials, business leaders and people from different professions gathered at the Rajshahi Press Club to pay their last respects.
Representatives of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Civil Surgeon’s Office, Rajshahi City Corporation, Chamber of Commerce, Editors’ Forum and district administration were among those who visited the press club premises.
His namaz-e-janaza will be held after Asr prayers on Monday at Dargapara Mosque. He will be buried at Hetem Kha Cemetery in Rajshahi city.
His death has drawn condolences from journalists and representatives of political, social, cultural and business communities in Rajshahi.
