Police detained 21 people in Kishoreganj on allegations of involvement in online gambling and fraud through mobile applications.
A team of the Detective Branch (DB) conducted the operation in Kishoreganj town and adjoining areas late Saturday night.
Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman disclosed the information at a press briefing at Kishoreganj Model Police Station on Sunday afternoon.
The SP said various apps are being used to lure people with attractive offers and involve them in online gambling without their families being aware of it.
He said some apps reportedly offer schemes such as purchasing 10 points for Tk 100 with the promise of earning Tk 1,000. Young people are increasingly falling into such traps and recruiting others, eventually forming larger networks, he added.
The police chief said the operation was conducted at night to prevent young people from engaging in such activities secretly or away from their families.
“We have detained 21 people and are scrutinising their app activities and financial transactions,” he said. “Those found innocent will be released, while those involved in criminal activities will face legal action under gambling and fraud-related laws.”
Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Nazmus Sakib Khan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md Shariful Haque and Kishoreganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abul Kalam Bhuiyan were present at the briefing.
