Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has added five new container carrier trucks to its waste management fleet to improve the speed and efficiency of waste collection and transportation.
DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan inaugurated the trucks on Sunday morning at the corporation's transport depot at the proposed wholesale market area in Gabtoli.
Speaking at the inauguration, the administrator said the new trucks would help remove household waste more quickly through the city's Secondary Transfer Stations (STSs) and modernise waste management operations.
He said DNCC is currently removing around 4,000 tonnes of waste from Dhaka every day using 180 to 200 vehicles.
Khan said another 10 container carrier trucks would be added to the DNCC fleet in the future to further strengthen waste transportation capacity.
He said the city corporation is taking various measures to ensure a cleaner city by removing waste quickly and efficiently and providing better services to residents.
The administrator also claimed that waterlogging has largely been brought under control in DNCC areas despite heavy rainfall, attributing the improvement to ongoing reform initiatives and effective measures taken by the corporation.
Regarding dengue control, he said DNCC has started implementing a 90-day special programme announced by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Under the programme, regular cleaning drives, destruction of Aedes mosquito larvae, mobile court operations and fines are being carried out.
He said the corporation expects the dengue situation to come under control within the next three months.
After inaugurating the new trucks, the DNCC administrator personally drove one of them on a trial run.
The new heavy vehicles will be used to transport waste efficiently from STSs under DNCC jurisdiction to designated landfills. Officials said the addition of the trucks would increase the corporation's waste transportation capacity and allow waste to be taken to landfills in less time.
DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Asaduzzaman, Chief Waste Management Officer Humayun Kabir, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Rakib Hasan and Chief Health Officer Brigadier General M Imrul Kayes, among other senior officials, attended the programme.
