Members of the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force have seized around 2.5kg of gold from a Chinese national at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The gold was recovered around 2:30pm on Sunday from the Canopy-1 area of the airport following a search by Ansar personnel.

According to officials, the Chinese national, who had arrived from China, allegedly attempted to smuggle the gold by concealing it inside five earthen mugs or containers using a chemical substance.

Ansar members Rayhan Hossain and APC Saiful detected the suspicious items while performing their duties and immediately recovered the five earthen containers. PC Md Anisur Rahman subsequently informed Upazila Trainer Omar Faruk, who was responsible for the shift.

Omar Faruk later arrived at the scene and handed over the recovered items to airport Customs officials.

With the assistance of a goldsmith, Customs officials burned the five earthen containers to separate the concealed material. The process led to the recovery of five gold bars or biscuits.

The seized gold weighed approximately 2.5kg, equivalent to around 215 bhori.

Officials said the alleged smuggling attempt was detected through the vigilance and prompt action of Ansar personnel at the airport.

The incident highlights the role of security personnel in maintaining vigilance at sensitive and important installations such as the international airport.
