A public awareness meeting was held in Kishoreganj on Sunday to raise awareness about dengue prevention amid a recent rise in infections in the district.
The meeting was organised by Kishoreganj Municipality at Rakuail Government Primary School.
Speaking as the chief guest, Kishoreganj Municipality Administrator and Deputy Director of the Local Government Division Jebun Nahar Shammi said administrative efforts alone cannot prevent dengue and urged citizens to take responsibility for keeping their homes and surrounding areas clean.
She said 110 people in Kishoreganj have recently been infected with dengue. Waste and polythene dumped in drains are causing waterlogging and creating breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, she said.
She urged residents not to throw waste into drains and instead dispose of it at designated places or in dustbins.
“Cleanliness habits must be developed from within families,” she said, stressing the importance of teaching children about cleanliness from an early age.
She said a clean and dengue-free city can be ensured through coordinated efforts by the municipality and residents.
Among those attending the meeting were Kishoreganj Municipality Ward-1 BNP President Md Saheb Ali, former councillor Ismail Hossain Idu, Advocate Abdullah Al Bukhari and businessman Zunaid Pintu.
Municipal officials, including Executive Engineer Md Rafiqul Islam, Municipal Executive Officer Syed Shafiqul Rahman, Social Development Officer Sanjoy Kumar Modak, Accounts Officer Md Sirajul Islam and other engineering officials, were also present.
Teachers and students of Rakuail Government Primary School, along with local guardians and community representatives, attended the awareness meeting. Assistant Sub-Assistant Engineer Faruk Ahmed moderated the programme.
