National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary has blamed Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed for Ishraque Hossain’s predicament, alleging that the minister’s failure to maintain law and order has left others facing the consequences.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after exchanging greetings on the occasion of Durga Puja at Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka on Monday morning.
“Ishraque Bhai recently entered politics with the aim of stopping drug-related activities. The issue is the home minister’s responsibility. Why did Ishraque Bhai get shot? The home minister commits the offence, while someone else suffers for the sin,” Nasiruddin said.
His comments came while Ishraque was still serving as state minister for liberation war affairs. Ishraque announced his resignation later in the day amid controversy surrounding an anti-drug raid in which he reportedly brandished a firearm.
Criticising the country's law and order situation, Nasiruddin said people were dying and facing oppression in different parts of the country, while Salahuddin was occupied with constitutional matters.
The NCP leader also criticised the BNP government for failing to ensure the security of the Hindu community, saying that despite its promises to protect all citizens, members of the community continued to face difficulties.
He pointed to incidents of vandalism in different places over the past three to four months.
Referring to the controversy over cow slaughter at Jagannath University, Nasiruddin urged Muslims to remain sensitive to the Hindu community while practising their religion.
“We will do everything, but we must ensure that our Hindu brothers are not hurt by those actions,” he said.
