Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sohana Nasrin came downstairs from her office to personally hand over a Tk 2.9 million compensation cheque to an 80-year-old man suffering from liver cancer who was unable to climb the stairs to her office.
The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon on the premises of the Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner's Office, where the elderly man, Hafiz Uddin, arrived to receive compensation for his property affected by government land acquisition.
Uddin, a resident of Pitolganj Bazar in Sidla Union under Hossainpur upazila, has been battling advanced liver cancer and is physically too weak to walk properly. Given his age and medical condition, he could not climb the stairs to reach the DC's office on the second floor.
After learning about his difficulty, DC Sohana Nasrin immediately came downstairs and went to meet him. She enquired about his health and handed him the Tk 2.9 million cheque with care and respect.
The gesture moved Uddin and his accompanying family members, who expressed gratitude for the deputy commissioner's considerate response and wished her good health and a long life.
According to officials, Uddin's house was affected by a government land acquisition project, making him eligible for compensation. He visited the district administration office on Tuesday to collect the payment.
The deputy commissioner's decision to come downstairs rather than ask the elderly man to make his way upstairs drew appreciation from the family members present at the scene.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Istiak Imon, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Jesmin Akter and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Wadia Shabab were also present during the cheque handover.
