Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) has intensified a special operation to prevent robberies in Sylhet city.
SMP Commissioner Abdul Quddus Chowdhury said that a list of 263 robbers has already been identified.
He gave this information at a press conference on law and order held at his office in the city's suburbs on Monday evening.
He said that 44 people have already been arrested among those listed and the rest will be arrested in phases. Although 48 robbers were arrested from October to December, this number increased to 103 from January to March.
He said that we have a zero tolerance policy against robbers. A special team is being formed to conduct operations. Hopefully, it will be possible to bring this crime under control in a short time. It is not realistic to completely eliminate crime, but it is possible to control it and keep it at a tolerable level. 'Reducing crime to zero is a utopian idea. In reality, this is not possible. However, through effective measures, crime can be controlled and kept at a tolerable level.'
He said that the police are conducting regular operations to improve the law and order situation. Especially, strong activities are being carried out to suppress robbery, theft and other crimes.
He said that according to international indicators, the law and order situation in Sylhet city is in a satisfactory position.
Abdul Quddus Chowdhury said, 'The police are not working alone to build a safe city, but rather in cooperation with the people and the media.'
He also said that Sylhet is a tourism-dependent region. Therefore, ensuring security here is very important. We are working towards that goal. He sought everyone's cooperation in maintaining law and order.
