National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has urged the government to settle all national “dues” in the same way that outstanding payments are cleared when opening a new year’s halkhata on Pahela Baishakh.
Referring to the “outstanding payment” as the July National Charter, he said the government has opened a new halkhata while leaving reforms pending.
Nahid, also the opposition chief whip in the Jatiya Sangsad, made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a cultural programme marking Pahela Baishakh organised by the NCP in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.
“On this day of Pahela Baishakh, a halkhata is opened where all dues are settled. We want all dues in our national life to be settled. That due is the July Charter,” he said.
“A July mass uprising has taken place, and elections have been held, with a government and an opposition formed as well. But the people have been deprived of reforms. Meanwhile, the government has opened a halkhata while reforms remain pending.”
Nahid said, “On this day, our commitment is that in this new year, we will settle those dues.”
He urged those who are trying to ignore the July Charter and the referendum to implement reforms without delay, in line with the referendum outcome.
The NCP leader also alleged that the current government has betrayed the people by repealing important ordinances issued by the interim government.
“We hope that within a short time, those will be introduced again as bills and turned into laws,” he added.
