The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has unveiled a list of 36 nominated candidates for the reserved women's seats in the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad, marking a key step ahead of the scheduled election on May 12. According to sources from the party's press wing, the nominations were finalized following an extensive screening process conducted by the BNP's nomination board. The announcement comes after days of interviews with aspiring candidates who sought nomination for the reserved seats.
Among the prominent nominees is Selima Rahman, a member of the BNP Standing Committee. Other notable figures include Shirin Sultana, Rasheda Begum, and Rehena Akter. The list also features Nipun Roy Chowdhury, who is also a member of the BNP's central executive committee, alongside Bilkis Islam. Other nominees include Shakila Farzana and Newaz Halima Arli. Further names on the list are Helen Jerin Khan, Mahmuda Habiba, Sanjida Islam, and Shammi Akter. The nominations also include Ferdousi Ahmed and Bithika Binte Hossain, among others, reflecting a mix of senior female leader and emerging political figures within the party.
Rigorous Selection Process: The BNP began interviewing candidates for the reserved women's seats on April 17 at its central office in Nayapaltan. According to party insiders, more than 700 nominations were submitted by nomination seekers, indicating strong competition and interest in the political opportunity. Members of the BNP nomination board conducted the interviews, assessing candidates based on political experience, organizational contribution, and public engagement.
Seat Distribution and Election Timeline: The election for the reserved women's seats in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad is scheduled for May 12. A total of 50 seats are allocated for women in parliament under the proportional representation system. As per the present seat-sharing arrangement, the BNP-led alliance is expected to secure 36 reserved seats, while the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami alliance will receive 13 seats, and one seat will go to independent members. The allocation is determined based on the number of general seats won by each party or alliance, with one reserved seat distributed for every six general Member of Parliament.
Political Significance: The announcement of the nominees underscores BNP's efforts to strengthen female leadership within its political structure and ensure representation in parliament. Analysts say the inclusion of both seasoned female leader and new face reflects a strategic attempt to balance experience and renewal within the party. With the election date approaching, attention will now turn to the formal selection processand the possible role of these nominees in shaping parliamentary debates and policymaking in the coming term.
