The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has sentenced former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman and two other former senior police officers to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July 2024 Uprising.
The convicted officers are former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Additional Deputy Commissioner (Khilgaon Zone) Md Rashedul Islam, and former Rampura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mashiur Rahman.
The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, delivered the verdict on Saturday. The tribunal also sentenced former Rampura Police Outpost Assistant Sub-Inspector Chanchal Chandra Sarkar to 20 years' imprisonment and former Sub-Inspector Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan to life imprisonment.
Among the five convicts, only Chanchal Chandra Sarkar is currently in custody, while the remaining four are absconding.
According to the prosecution, the convictions relate to the killing of Nadim and Maya Islam during police firing in Rampura on 19 July 2024, and the attempted killing of Amir Hossain, who was shot multiple times while hanging from the cornice of an under-construction building as he tried to escape police gunfire.
The prosecution also said Basit Khan Musa, Maya Islam's six-year-old grandson, was shot in the same incident. Despite receiving treatment both in Bangladesh and abroad, the child remains unable to speak.
The tribunal began delivering the verdict after allowing the proceedings to be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV).
