The government has deployed 5,000 armed Bangladesh Ansar members to 500 Upazila Health Complexes across the country to strengthen security, curb middlemen and irregularities, and ensure a safe environment for patients and healthcare workers.
The deployment was announced at a briefing held at the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party Headquarters on Wednesday, where Additional Director General Brigadier General Mamunur Rashid addressed the newly deployed personnel.
Under the initiative, each Upazila Health Complex will have a 10-member Ansar team, comprising one platoon commander, one assistant platoon commander and eight Ansar members, providing round-the-clock security on a rotational basis.
Brig Gen Rashid said the personnel will be responsible for maintaining law and order, preventing the activities of broker syndicates, illegal ambulance operations, medicine-related fraud and other criminal activities, while ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services for the public.
He also warned that any member found involved in misconduct or criminal activities would face strict legal action, stressing the importance of discipline, integrity and professionalism.
Officials said the deployment is expected to enhance security for healthcare workers, protect government property, reduce the influence of middlemen and improve the overall quality and discipline of healthcare services at the grassroots level.
