Venezuela’s interim government on Monday raised the death toll from the devastating twin earthquakes that struck the country on June 24 to **6,509**.
The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 quakes caused widespread destruction in the coastal state of La Guaira, where at least 190 buildings collapsed.
The latest figure is up from the previously reported 6,438 deaths. Recovery operations remain underway as authorities continue searching for victims trapped beneath the rubble.
Thousands of people displaced by the earthquakes are still living in makeshift camps, while the government has yet to disclose the number of people still missing.
Authorities have so far provided 335 homes to quake victims and have pledged to deliver 4,000 homes by the end of the year.
