Bangladeshi journalist Debashish Dutta, 40, his wife Afsana Simmin, 25, their three-year-old son Swarna Shish Dutta, and his father-in-law Akram Ali, 64, were killed in a devastating fire at a residential hotel in Kolkata, India.
The deaths were confirmed by Gazi Mahbub Rahman, former president of Kushtia Press Club and editor of local newspaper Dainik Ajker Alo. He said Debashish served as the newspaper’s executive editor and was also the Kushtia correspondent for Channel Nine and Dainik Ajker Patrika.
Debashish’s family home is in the Aruapara Rajarhat area of Kushtia town, while his father-in-law’s home is in the Thanapara area.
Family members said Debashish had travelled to Bengaluru on August 3 for his wife’s medical treatment. He also has an eight-year-old daughter and his parents.
Most of the victims had reportedly travelled to Kolkata for medical treatment.
