An Ansar Battalion member foiled an attempted theft at the Matarbari Thermal Power Plant and recovered around 250 kilograms of copper electrical wire worth an estimated Tk 4.5 lakh.
The incident took place at around 9:30pm on Saturday when Constable Md Sohag Hossain, a member of Cox’s Bazar Ansar Battalion (1 BN), was on duty at the plant’s main gate.
According to the Ansar authorities, Sohag noticed several people behaving suspiciously and carrying electrical wires. When he attempted to stop them, the suspects allegedly threw bricks and stones at him and tried to flee with the materials.
Despite the risk, Sohag continued to resist their attempt. The suspects eventually abandoned the electrical materials at the scene and fled.
The recovered copper wire was estimated to weigh 250kg and have a market value of around Tk 4.5 lakh.
The Ansar authorities said Sohag’s alertness and prompt action prevented the theft of important electrical equipment from the power plant.
They added that Ansar and Village Defence Force members remain engaged in preventing theft, sabotage and other criminal activities, particularly at important installations.
