The Mohanpur upazila administration in Rajshahi has formed a three-member committee to investigate allegations that Sheikh Md Munzur Rahman, headteacher of Amrail High School, is addicted to drugs. A drug test will also be conducted to verify the allegation.
The issue came to the attention of the upazila administration after a report on the allegation was published in the national daily Daily Industry. Subsequently, a three-member committee was formed to investigate and verify the allegations.
According to an office order signed by Mohanpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Fahima Binte Akhtar on August 13, the committee was formed to investigate the allegations through a field-level inquiry.
The office order stated that a report published in Daily Industry alleged that the headteacher was addicted to drugs and, as a result, was seriously neglecting his official duties and responsibilities at the school.
SM Mahmud Hasan, Upazila Secondary Education Officer, has been appointed convener of the committee. Bibhas Kumar Sharma, medical officer at Mohanpur Upazila Health Complex, and Md Shahadat Hossain, assistant programmer at the Mohanpur office of the Department of Information and Communication Technology, have been appointed members.
The committee has been instructed to complete the investigation and necessary verification within seven working days and submit its report to the office of the UNO.
None of 13 students passed SSC exam
Meanwhile, questions have also been raised about the school's academic performance.
According to a show-cause notice issued by the upazila administration, 13 students from Amrail High School appeared in the 2026 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination, but none of them passed. The school, however, has 14 teachers receiving salaries and allowances under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme.
In the notice signed by UNO Fahima Binte Akhtar on August 11, the result was described as “extremely disappointing” for Mohanpur upazila.
The headteacher was asked to provide a satisfactory explanation as to why none of the 13 students passed the examination. He was instructed to submit the explanation within three working days of receiving the notice.
The notice also warned that necessary steps could be taken to cancel the school's MPO status if a satisfactory explanation was not provided.
Copies of the notice were sent to the Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner, chairman of the Rajshahi Education Board, the Member of Parliament for constituency 54-Rajshahi-3 (Paba-Mohanpur), relevant officials of the Ministry of Education and other concerned offices.
Drug test to verify allegation
The formation of the investigation committee has sparked discussion among local residents. Several school and local sources claimed that the headteacher had stopped taking drugs after learning about the committee. However, the claim could not be independently verified.
SM Mahmud Hasan, convener of the investigation committee, said, “The investigation committee formed over the allegations against the headteacher of Amrail High School will conduct a field-level investigation tomorrow, Monday.”
He said the committee would examine and verify various aspects of the allegations as part of the investigation.
Bibhas Kumar Sharma, a member of the committee and medical officer at the upazila health complex, said a drug test would be conducted through the police to determine whether the headteacher is addicted to drugs.
“The matter can be confirmed only after the test results are available,” he said.
The administration is currently treating the allegation as a matter under investigation. A decision on the allegation will be made based on the drug test results and the investigation committee's report.
At the same time, the administration is examining the fact that none of the school's 13 SSC candidates passed the 2026 examination.
As a result, both the allegation of drug addiction against the headteacher and concerns over the school's academic performance are now under administrative scrutiny.
The next course of action will become clear after the investigation report is submitted, depending on whether the allegations are substantiated or not.
