Bangladesh repaid more than twice the amount of foreign loans it received in July, the first month of the 2026–27 fiscal year, as loan disbursements declined year-on-year.
According to data released by the Economic Relations Division (ERD) on August 30, foreign loan disbursements stood at $180.18 million in July, down 13.39% from $208.04 million recorded in the same month of the previous fiscal year.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh repaid $453.23 million in principal and interest on foreign loans during July.
Debt repayment also increased compared with the previous year. Bangladesh repaid $446.68 million in July 2025, meaning repayments rose by nearly 4% year-on-year this July.
The figures indicate that Bangladesh's foreign debt repayments in the opening month of the current fiscal year were more than 2.5 times the fresh loan disbursements received during the period.
