Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said Bangladesh’s sustainable development depends on an effective and strong democratic system.
Speaking during a meeting with Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Anda Filip at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday, he said Bangladesh had restored democracy after a long struggle and remained committed to strengthening democratic practices.
Tarique said the BNP had played a role in restoring both multiparty and parliamentary democracy in the country. He also said his government was working to protect citizens’ constitutional rights and ensure essential public services.
Anda Filip praised Tarique’s leadership and his participation in parliamentary sessions, saying it reflected his commitment to parliamentary democracy. She also expressed the IPU’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Bangladesh’s parliament.
The meeting also discussed women’s empowerment, education and the Family Card programme. Tarique said empowering women was a key priority of his government.
